About U.S. Traffic

U.S. Traffic was founded as a Transportation Broker by James Jardine in November 1982 and opened for business in January 1983. Starting with a tiny office and a very modest base of clients, James used his many years of transportation experience to help match shipper needs to the most appropriate trucking firm for movements between the United States and Canada.

The deregulation initiatives of the 1980s aided the rapid growth and soon the company developed a larger customer base and a core of carriers competing to handle the many freight moves. The recession of the early 1990s made flow efficiencies an absolute prerequisite for survival in most industries. Many manufacturing and distribution firms that had previously shunned using transportation brokers flocked to U.S. Traffic for more efficient control of their transportation expenses.

The company adopted a policy of hiring only the best, and then adding additional training to further enhance staff expertise. This high quality staff group helped attract major shippers impressed by the depth of knowledge they could count on. It also added many smaller shippers that lacked in-house transport people and counted on U.S. Traffic to fill that void and allow them the same quality of supply chain management enjoyed by their larger competitors.

As the shipments being handled grew in complexity, so did the range of transport options offered to clients. Although the most common mode was still transport truck, many loads were being consigned to move via rail, air and sea.

The addition of an office in Tampa, Florida in the 1990s provided better service for shippers moving domestic State-to-State TL and LTL shipments, and for loads to and from Mexico.

The office in Mississauga, Ontario continued to handle domestic Canada loads and freight between the United States and Canada.

Our Calgary office specializes in project related freight, primarily destined to major construction sites in the energy (oil & gas) or mining industries, including those in remote areas of North America.

Satisfied customers include Shell Canada, Canadian Natural Resources, EnCana, Colt Engineering, AMEC Americas to name a few.

Products handled include general freight, over-dimensional, haz-mat or dangerous goods, rush or time-sensitive shipments, etc. Equipment available includes dry van, refrigerated, flat beds, low boys, step decks, open-top containers, etc. Freight origins include Canada, USA, and Mexico, including pick-ups from marine ports and air terminals.

Our staff are trained on site safety so that they may properly oversee the transport equipment we manage. Individual Project coordinators are assigned to manage the day-to-day transport activities of each project.

Mr. Jardine retired to a position as Chairman of the Board in December of 2000 and turned the Presidency over to Mr. John McDonald. John had been Vice-President for many years and was perfectly positioned for the new challenge. Mr. McDonald is pleased to report that the "tiny" office and "modest" client base has realized considerable growth. U.S. Traffic now employs staff occupying over 11000 square feet of office space. Customers serviced are still primarily based in the United States and Canada but also include clients in South America, Europe and Asia. There have been countless changes in technology and in the way transportation is managed, but it's the same dedication to customer service that spelled success 20 years ago that is allowing the staff at U.S. Traffic to continue matching shipper needs to the most appropriate transportation providers around the continent, and around the world.
